![]() He entered the 2019 season as the backup to Hendon Hooker and Ryan Willis. The fact he did that was a sign that Tech saw him as a quarterback of the future. The transfer from Virginia Tech played in three games with the Hokies as a true freshman in 2018. For the first time, the former elite-status recruit out of Chicago who had so many colleges seeking his letter of intent signature, will enter the season opener as the No. Patterson said the news didn’t really hit him until he called his parents later to tell them that he won the job. “Me and Cam were in the same room so I looked at it from his perspective.” All rights reserved.“I knew what Cam was feeling,” he said. Patterson was a highly regarded recruit out of Chicago who chose Virginia Tech over schools like Iowa, North Carolina and Penn State. His most memorable moment at Virginia Tech came against North Carolina that season when he scored the game-winning two-point conversion to end the longest game in ACC history, a six-overtime win, 43-41, over North Carolina. That's ultimately why I decided to leave."Īt Virginia Tech, he started a game against Notre Dame in 2019. So I have to go do something about this if I plan on doing anything with playing quarterback. Before spring ball, I was oblivious to that. It's hard to replace the guy you just won the national championship with. "If I was a coach, I would do the same thing. "It was the realization that we did win a national championship with a different quarterback," he said. He said he was unlucky with the injury and his decision to transfer was based on simple logic. Patterson stressed he had a good football experience in Fargo and was treated well there. He finished that game with 98 rushing yards on 11 carries. NDSU designed a package for Patterson throughout the FCS playoffs, including a 34-yard run in the first quarter of the national title game victory over Montana State. His replacement, Cam Miller, led the Bison to the national title. Patterson started the first seven games of the season for the Bison before spraining the AC joint in his throwing shoulder. He pointed to Langsdorf coaching Tommy Armstrong at Nebraska and envisioned playing that style at Temple. He averaged 5.8 yards per rush and completed 54.5-percent of his passes. Patterson is a talented dual-threat quarterback who rushed for seven touchdowns and threw for six more last season for North Dakota State. Patterson will join a quarterback room that features another high-profile transfer, as the competition for the starting job will include former Georgia quarterback and Ohio State commitment D'Wan Mathis. He plans to get a graduate degree from Temple's Fox School of Business in Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management. Patterson will have two years of eligibility remaining. He also clicked with veteran offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf, who he said will likely run the offense 30-percent from under center and 70-percent from shotgun. ![]() Patterson pointed to his strong relationship with wide receiver coach and passing game coordinator Jafar Williams, who came from Virginia Tech, as one reason he felt comfortable at Temple. "Most people want to play for a coach like that. "That says a lot about him," Patterson said of Drayton. Patterson stayed connected with Drayton, who he noted the Temple players raved about as being "real" because of his ability to forge genuine connections through sharing relatable stories from his own life. Drayton took over a program that went 3-9 last season and lost the final seven games of the year. Patterson is arguably the most high-profile recruit to join first-year coach Stan Drayton's rebuild effort at Temple. I know a lot of people know what I can do. I just wanted a shot and take it from there and prove what I can do. "I told all the coaches, I didn't need any guarantees (to start). "It's a shot to be the best me I can be, in a sense." Patterson told ESPN on Wednesday. He played in 11 games over three seasons at Virginia Tech from 2018 to 2020. There was a consolidated school in Dunbar from 1922-1958. By the 2010s, Ferguson’s school was also closed. The last class to graduate from Ferguson was in 1960, and after that the school was for third- and fourth-grade students in the Le Grand-Dunbar-Ferguson (LDF) school district and, later, East Marshall. ![]() The Dillon school closed in 1955, and the nearby Rock Valley school lasted from 1862-1954.įerguson initially had a two-room schoolhouse prior to consolidation with nearby schools in 1915. A replacement building was constructed and opened in 1924 and continues to serve as part of East Marshall High School.Īs with West Marshall, some communities lost schools as a result of consolidation. By 1871, it was clear a bigger space was needed for the students so a two-story brick schoolhouse was built on the northeast side of town.Ī three-story building was built in 1916 to accomodate even more students, but it burnt down sometime in the seven years thereafter. The first school in Le Grand was established in the mid-1850s. That district currently serves the communities of Le Grand, Gilman, Laurel, Quarry, Dillon, Dunbar and Ferguson.Įast Marshall was formed in 1992, according to “Continuing History.” Prior to that, there were a couple of waves of consolidation. On the other side of the county, the purple-and-gold East Marshall Mustangs have come about much more recently. “Rhodes’ citizens vehemently opposed the (local school) closing because they anticipated a negative effect on the town, but were unsuccessful,” it reads. The final blows came in 1979 with the closing of the Clemons school building and in 1983 with the Melbourne school closing.Īccording to “Continuing History,” there was discontent among some citizens in the smaller towns around State Center when it came to consolidation. However, as the years went on and new educational additions popped up in State Center, other towns began to lose their school buildings. The formation of the current district didn’t immediately spell the end for local school buildings in the other towns. Rhodes and State Center combined in 1961, just before the final 1962 formation of West Marshall. Minerva Consolidated School combined with State Center in 1945, and LaMoille did the same in 1955. Another wave of consolidation came in the post-World War II period. That was the way of things in western Marshall County for a few decades. The same happened in State Center in 1909 and in LaMoille and Melbourne around 1914-15, according to “Continuing History.” Rhodes Consolidated Schools started in 1883, combining students at several area schoolhouses. After that, a first wave of school consolidation began in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The first small schoolhouses appeared in the district in the 1860s in Rhodes and State Center. The modern district came to be in 1962 after an election was held to consolidate several independent area districts into West Marshall, according to “Continuing History.” Today, the black-and-gold of West Marshall Community School District covers State Center, where all of its education buildings are located, as well as Melbourne, Rhodes, St. Krob said looking at historical population data can sometimes be difficult because methods of collecting information were different than they are now. The arrival of the Baby Boomer generation also contributed to the growth of the state’s population. He said international immigration from places like Germany and Ireland was a key to that population growth in the early- and mid-20th century like it is today. ![]() “Iowa’s population in general has always just had a slow and steady population increase,” he said, noting that was prior to the farm crisis in the 1980s. Gary Krob of the State Library of Iowa’s State Data Center said the state’s population experienced steady growth throughout those time periods. In the 1940s and beyond, she said consolidation saw schools in smaller towns lose out in favor of those in larger towns, like State Center, Le Grand and, in her case, Marshalltown. She said the first wave of consolidations in the late 1800s and early 1900s came as a result of country schools banding together. Lang said Van Cleve, just like some communities in the West Marshall, East Marshall and GMG school districts, could not keep up with the educational and facilities needs required by the state for student success. That small town was eventually added to the Marshalltown School District and its local building closed. Lang said she grew up in Van Cleve, east of Melbourne. “There are pros and cons like there is in everything.” “The small town people, like we were … thought consolidation was probably not good for us because we would lose our school,” said 34-year Marshalltown Schools teacher and current Green Mountain-Garwin substitute teacher Julie Lang. |
